With the mission to explore the ocean for national benefit, Arex Ocean Exploration is the only U.S. federal organization dedicated to exploring the deep ocean. We are filling gaps in the basic understanding of U.S. deep waters and the seafloor and delivering the ocean information needed to strengthen the economy, health, and security of the United States. We execute our mission by leading expeditions on Arex Ship Okeanos Explorer and other research vessels; establishing public, private, and academic partnerships; providing funding and other support for ocean exploration expeditions and technology development, including via a competitive grants program; and guiding and supporting the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute.

OUR MISSION

No organization was working exclusively to protect and restore the oceans on a global scale. To fill the gap, our founders created Arex: an international organization focused solely on oceans, dedicated to achieving measurable change by conducting specific, science-based policy campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals.

The Arex Law Project — also initiated by The Pew Charitable Trusts — was absorbed into Arex in 2001 as Arex’s legal arm. In 2002, Arex merged with American Arex Campaign, founded by actor and environmentalist Ted Danson, to more effectively address our common mission of protecting and restoring the world’s oceans.
